“Anxiety is a reaction to a situation we perceive as stressful or dangerous.” says licensed clinical psychologist Monique Reynolds, Ph.D
Teens and young adults face anxiety more so than ever before. There are now millions of young people dealing with some sort of anxiety on a day-to-day basis and for many of them, they struggle to cope. You cannot blame people as to why they feel very anxious about daily life as the pressures are growing. For some, they deal with their anxieties by locking themselves away in a house all day long and pretending to be lazy and ‘a normal teen or young adult’ but, in truth, that’s not always the reason behind it. Why is there such a surge in anxiety in young people today?
Life As We Know It
Why are so many teens and young adults plagued with anxiety problems? In all honesty, it’s down to modern life. Life is never easy but there are so many pressures on teenagers and indeed young adults. Modern life brings about lots of new challenges and for the most part, they’re hard to cope with. There are pressures on young girls to look good and if a young woman tries her best to become a size zero with the perfect look but she isn’t happy with the results, it can lead to anxiety. Young men are also becoming more perfectionist-like with lots of pressure on them to become almost male models with perfect looks. Those are only two very small examples but there are lots more and it’s really all contributing to anxiety in teens and young adults.
“These days it seems like worry and overwhelm are just normal. You’ve just gotten so accustomed to juggling it all – but inside you’re afraid you’re about to drop everything.” says Elizabeth Cush, LCPC.
How to Combat Anxiety
As most will know, anxiety is not easy to deal with. To be honest, there are some who go through small bouts of anxiety on a daily basis and are able to battle through it without any thought of it. Unfortunately, there are many others who aren’t able to do that. Combating anxiety takes real time and effort because everyone reacts differently to it. For instance, teens can choose to cope with anxiety by starving themselves while young adults in their twenties and thirties can opt for overeating or binge-drinking. It’s hard to know the next level or where anxiety will lead to. However, that is why it’s necessary to look at getting help for this. It isn’t easy to cope with anxiety and combating it can really be a challenge. By seeking help from a professional such as a therapist or counselor, it might be possible to combat it. check it here!
Can Talking To A Professional Really Work?
Some seem to think talking to a professional psychologist or counselor is admitting they’re crazy and are afraid to do that. However, talking about anxieties isn’t something to be ashamed about and you are certainly not crazy. What’s more, you are not alone in dealing with anxiety either. Anxieties can occur from anything and everything; from dealing with exams to moving out into the real world and succeeding. There are some in their thirties who are so afraid to live their lives because they might fail at what they do—they’re anxious and life passes by so quickly. Talking to a professional might help give you a boost and find a simpler way to overcome anxiety.
Overcome Your Anxieties
Life is not easy. For some, they’re afraid to live it as they think they’ll fail and become a failure. It’s never easy living as there are lots of things that make us afraid and it’s getting to a point where many youngsters, even those in their twenties, do not want to leave the home. You might think it’s strange but it’s happening every day and it’s hard to break that cycle. That is why you need to find a way to overcome your anxieties and seeking help from a professional counselor or therapist can be an excellent idea.
“Anxiety can be much better faced and understood when we choose a mindset of self-compassion and courage.” says Alicia Clark, Psy.D.
